Atelier (French): a private workshop or studio of a professional artist where a principal master and a number of assistants, students and apprentices can work together.

The Jody Kahlon atelier is a unique creative hub of couture. A thriving innovative studio. In this space, Jody shows her passion for mentoring and collaborating. You can come into Jody’s atelier and learn to design, pattern make, cut and construct garments.

As a client you will experience a bespoke consultation in which Jody shares her four creative stages.’ The four ‘F’s’ is a simple way to explain and teach my core philosophy.’ Each ‘F’ is as important as the other.

Fashioned.   Fit.   Fabric.   Finish.

Fashioned

When conceiving a design, I think about and consider most body shapes and forms. I focus on geometry and symmetry and how each design can be manipulated to accommodate a variety of shapes. Keeping in mind timelessness and comfort, the garment can be worn for many years.

Fit

Patterning and fitting all take place in my studio and are usually undertaken by me. This stage of creation can take the most attention and is the process I value as the most important. A well fitting garment ensures comfort, versatility and ultimately flatters the form.

Fabric

Considering the materials’ complexities, I guide clients through colour combination, texture and patterns. Added processes such as applique, embroidery and printing, are regarded to complement the fabric or enhance the design line in the garment. This editing process results in a unified creation that encapsulates the design and form of the garment.

Finish

After the design fit, fabric and construction are thought through and executed well. Quality buttons, trims, detail, hand finishing and lining add to the garment’s substance and Jody’s style. This completes the garment’s finesse and how it presents on the body.

“I am a natural collaborator, teacher and mentor and am passionate about passing on my skills in design and construction to tomorrow’s generation of designers.”

Jody is mindful of the depletion of natural resources in the fashion industry today   “Carefully considered design and well-made garments have a positive effect on the environment.”

Jody’s atelier is also an educational space where aspiring designers will learn various technical skills of the rag trade.

“Jody taught me so much about garment construction and making quality garments that my personal work reached a new level.”
